Folk Life Defined
"... what is Folklife? The easiest way to explain is to take the word apart. Folk = People. Life = Music, at least for the folks involved in Folklife.
The Humboldt Folklife Society is a group of dedicated volunteers who love music, mostly folk music, but certainly not exclusively...
Their goal: put music in everybody's life."
Bob Doran - North Coast Journal, July '09

Martyn Joseph in Concert - February 4 at the Arcata Playhouse
Martyn Joseph is a performer like no other. Shades of Springsteen, Knopfler and Dave Matthews there may be - but he stands in his own right, built on a reputation for giving what thousands have described as the best live music experience of their lives.
One of acoustic music’s most arresting artists, the Welsh singer songwriter has been in demand on both sides of the Atlantic for over two decades. Martyn’s 25 year career has embraced some notable achievements including 5 Top 50 UK chart positions and appearances and tours with Suzanne Vega, Marc Cohn, Joan Armatrading, Clannad, Art Garfunkel, Jools Holland and even Celine Dion and Shirley Bassey. He has won fans everywhere with his uncanny fusion of material - feisty, pull no punches big issue numbers alongside stripped bare love songs.
The show is Saturday, February 4 at 8 pm. Tickets are $15 general & $13 HFS & Playhouse members, and are available at Wildberries Market, Wildwood Music, The Works or online.

Sweetback Sisters - Tuesday, February 21 at the Arcata Playhouse
Sweetback Sisters Emily Miller and Zara Bode may not be blood relations, but their precise, family-style harmonies recall the best of country music from the Everlys to The Judds, as well as the spirited rockabilly energy of Wanda Jackson, one of the band’s role models. Like the artists they admire, the Sweetbacks are concerned with the traditional subjects of heartbreak, revenge, remorse and staying strong in the face of relationships gone wrong, albeit with a contemporary sensibility. "We're a renegade retro band that mixes up country, swing and honky tonk," explains Bode. "Sometimes what we deliver is straight out of the 50s; other times it’s BR549 meets The B52s."
Opening the show is Cahalen Morrison and Eli West. It all starts at 7:30 pm; admission is $15 general & $13 HFS & Playhouse members!

Ivan Rosenberg & Chris Coole - Friday, February 24 at the Playhouse
Former Humboldt County resident and dobro virtuoso Ivan Rosenberg returns to Arcata for a special show with Chris Coole at 8 pm on Friday, February 24 at the Arcata Playhouse. Tickets are $10 HFS members, $12 general, and go on sale February 4th at Wildwood Music, Wildberries, and The Works, and are available now at Brown Paper Tickets.
Chris Coole and Ivan Rosenberg may have lots of geographical territory between them (Coole hails from Toronto, Ontario while Rosenberg now lives in Portland) but the clawhammer banjo/dobro duo are from the same place, musically speaking - a place where old time, bluegrass, and country blues are played on dobro, clawhammer banjo, and guitar. They first took to the road as an acoustic duo in 2008. They have since toured several times throughout Canada and the United States.
Rosenberg is known as one of the top dobro players on the scene today. His original music has appeared in over 200 tv shows and films including The Daily Show, Oprah, and Deadwood; he recently recorded on Southern Filibuster: A Tribute to Tut Taylor at the invitation of producer Jerry Douglas; and he won an IBMA award for co-writing the 2009 Song of the Year, Don't Throw Mama's Flowers Away.
Coole is well-known for his virtuosic clawhammer banjo music as well as his guitar playing and singing with the award-winning bluegrass band The Foggy Hogtown Boys. Coole’s recent solo album Old Dog received rave reviews, he was a finalist at the Clifftop banjo contest in 2004 and 2006, and his CDs with fellow Toronto banjoist Arnie Naiman are treasured by fans of old time banjo.
