Dirk Powell Interview, by Bob Doran

"...Well, it’s a means with which to express your innermost feelings with the world. I think a lot of people have that in traditional cultures, but as traditional cultures have been replaced by more modern, mass cultural settings, a lot of the entertainment goes a different way. You know if you sit and watch TV, it’s coming out of the TV at you, but you're not putting anything back into it. But when you play music, especially within a known framework, then, not only are you being entertained and passing the time, you are also saying some of the deepest things you have to say. I think that’s a problem in America today, a lot of the avenues for expression that people had naturally have been closed up or replaced with things that only go one way. For me it’s also a way for your ancestors to live through you, or even just people that you love, whether they were related to you or not. That’s another thing that’s happened in this country, we've become so accustomed to severing ties to the past. Everyone wants the newest thing, the most disposable thing. Again, in traditional cultures, most people realize that the respect you have for where you came from is vital. If you actually want to be happy and be in the moment, it’s best to know who you are and where you come from. It’s like this, if you know the past and can sort of see the future, you can be in the present without being limited. MORE...

Blue Ox May Day Celebration and move

After 31 years, Blue Ox celebrates the exciting move to its next home! The last public celebration at its current location will take place this Saturday, May 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., rain or shine and the HFS is supporting the Blue Ox in efforts to put together a fabulous day full of music.

The fourth annual May Day Living History and Artisans Faire is a benefit for KKDS-FM, "Blue Ox Youth Radio for Humboldt Bay," the low-wattage radio station being started by Blue Ox students to serve and educate young people in the Humboldt Bay area. Old-timey and bluegrass string band music all day with Compost Mountain Boys, Huckleberry Flint, Second Hand Band, and Wrangletown, plus the "Old-Timey and Bluegrass All-Star Hootenanny" with a lineup of super-pickers not to be missed! Also featured will be the award-winning barbershop quartet, Mirth First, as well as the Red Hat Kazoo Orchestra. MORE...

Humboldt County's New Old Time

by Jen Rice

If you had told me five years ago that there would be fifty young people standing in The Metro on a Friday night in late 2004 listening intently to a string band of five (even younger) people play 'Oh Susannah,' I'd have chuckled at such a thought. If you had told me then that a KHUM would host a weekly show focused on old time and bluegrass, or that every nook and cranny in Old Town during Arts Alive! would be filled with aspiring and seasoned pickers, you'd have been on the receiving end of a doubtful look. Cool Things to See and Hear

I asked HFS performers to share samples with us of their newly or soon-to-be released work. I've found that local cd's make great holiday gifts each year: we have some truly fantastic musicians here in Humboldt County, and this is my chance to send them out into the world and give a gift that my friends and family won't get elsewhere! So keep checking back; I'll add more songs as they come in. - Maia

Anything Is Possible and Everything Occurs opens the first cd by the beloved Southern Humboldt acappella women's quartet, Mothers and Daughters, entitled Harmony. Mothers and Daughters performed a breathtaking set at the 2004 Humboldt Folklife Festival. They perform infrequently, so if you get a chance to see them live, don't pass it up!

Life is a Road is from Eileen Hemphill-Haley's fourth cd, her first recorded on the CA northcoast. Eileen traveled to Capitol Records to master this cd; read about her trip and the Dec. 1 cd release party for Ordinary Life and Dog Tracks (with the Oregon Dogs) on her website.

I'll Be Home for Christmas is a bonus track on Arcata pianist Matthew Cook's new cd release, The Sounding Joy.

Matthew plays regularly at the Benbow Inn; visit his website for his gig schedule and more about his new and previous recordings, including Redwood Reflections, Stormy Weather and Summertime.
